What is the difference between CSID and NetID?
Computer Science operates a number of independently managed systems that use a CSID for login, while Dalhousie operates many of the administrative systems using a NetID. Some examples of systems for each:
CSID | NetID |
---|---|
timberlea.cs.dal.ca general compute server | DalOnline aka Banner |
db.cs.dal.ca database server | D2L / Brightspace |
graduate.cs.dal.ca GradApp | Office 365 Mail and Teams |
git.cs.dal.ca GitLab Server |
What is my BannerID?
This is also called your "Boo!" (from the prefix "B00") number. It looks like B00123456. This is the unique ID the University uses to identify you. It is sort of secret. We use it as a shared secret so that you can claim your CSID username.
You can find it on your DalCard in the upper right corner, or by logging into DalOnline (with your NetID), going to Web For Students, the Student Records, then View Holds. This screen (and several others) have your BannerID and your name in the upper right corner. Employees can find it in Web for Employees, Employee Dashboard, then My Profile.
What is my Lastname?
This is not actually as strange a question as it seems. We use an automated tool that breaks your Full Name into component parts. Sometimes it gets it wrong, so
- Luis Filipe del Campo ends up (FN:Luis) (MN:Filipe del) (LN:Campo), and
- Wang Xiu Ying ends up as (FN: Wang) (MN: Xiu) (LN: Ying) not (Lastname = Wang)
Therefore, if you know you have the BannerID correct, try either the very last element of your Family Name, or your Personal Name.
